The Irreconcilable Duality Of Body And Soul

"THE IRRECONCILABLE DUALITY OF BODY AND SOUL"

is a new series consisting of six large-scale paintings (180x130cm each), which will, in part, be shown at Västerås Konstmuseum this winter.

They all deal with inner and outer aspects of the body, & though they weren't initially inspired by a passage in Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness Of Being, I have, during the process, come to relate them to this very text:

"A long time ago, man would listen in amazement to the sound of regular beats in his chest, never suspecting what they were. He was unable to identify himself with so alien and unfamiliar an object as the body. The body was a cage, and inside that cage was something which looked, listened, feared, thought, and marvelled; that something, that remainder left over after the body had been accounted for, was the soul.

Today, of course, the body is no longer unfamiliar: we know that the beating in our chest is the heart and that the nose is the nozzle of a hose sticking out of the body to take oxygen to the lungs. The face is nothing but an instrument panel registering all the body mechanisms: digestion, sight, hearing, respiration, thought.

Ever since man has learned to give each part of the body a name, the body has given him less trouble. He has also learned that the soul is nothing more than the grey matter of the brain in action. The old duality of the body and the soul has become shrouded in scientific terminology, and we can laugh at it as merely obsolete prejudice.

But just make someone who has fallen in love listen to his stomach rumble, and the unity of body and soul, that lyrical illusion of the age of science, instantly fades away."

New studio-space / show-room?

Me & Simone checked out a new studio space in central Västerås yesterday. We're thinking about taking it. Currently we're painting in a cabin at home where we live, but we need a place to store finished work. It's a rather big studio, 85 square meters, so it can be used for other things as well; work-space, show-room, et cetera. It's a little pricey, but two friends are interested in sharing it with us. Since everyone won't be there at the same time, & we work in different mediums, I don't think it will get too crowded. Besides, we will still have our home studio. A decision needs to be made on Monday. But before that comes THE WEEKEND.

I told myself to make 5 large paintings for the upcoming exhibition at Västerås Konstmuseum (Västerås Art Museum), which I also did. But since I'm ahead of schedule, I'm currently working on a sixth. Which is great, 'cause this means there will be plenty to choose from when the time comes to hang the show. For the first time ever I'm filming the whole painting process, which will be edited into a video, probably about 10 minues long. My brother Lars Haukeland will compose the music to it. I'll be posting it here as soon as it is finished.Meanwhile, take a look at this:

I put these visuals to this great tune by Brian Jonestown Massacre.

It's collage work; abstract backgrounds featuring known people (some of the good guys, some of the bad guys), as a reflection of sorts on all the people/images that "live" inside us (whether we like it or not -- there is no escape...). Some are Swedish, so you might not recognise them.

This blog has, up until now, basically consisted of news about my art (mostly info on upcoming exhibitions) & posting of new works as they progress (i.e. a lot of shameless masturbating). Oh, & then we have the off-beat "Quote of the week" segment, & the odd photograph of a dead animal in the garden, or such. All this will, for better or worse, continue. But I'd like to add something to the mix. There are other flowers out there (apart from my art), that crack concrete. So, if I discover something new, which I like or which inspires me in some way, I might just share it here.

First off is Anna Calvi, my latest discovery music-wise.

I'm seeing her in Berlin this fall, something I'm very much looking forward to. After viewing some live clips & interviews on YouTube, it became clear that her powerful stage persona is very different from her rather shy, timid private persona. A lot of people seem puzzled by this. I'm not. I always found that very logical. That if you are restrained in one aspect of your life, you have to express yourself through another part. Fittingly, some time back, I had this PJ Harvey quote on the blog: "I don't loathe interviews, I'm just one of those people who makes music because I find it difficult to talk." I can see a parallel here, regarding my art. I sometimes don't like to take up a lot of space, attention-wise, in rooms filled with people, so I let my art take up space instead.

Enough said. I rather like the video. The railroad image works, it's suitable, as the song has that 'travelling' feel to it.
